WHAT WILL MY FUTURE BRING?: Sanjay Dutt (Reuters) Sanjay Dutt’s birthday and day of judgement arrive almost together. But sisters Priya and Namrata wish their brother his freedom -- the best gift of all. As his day of judgement finally arrives, almost coinciding with his 48th birthday, the film industry has nothing but blessings for Sanjay Dutt. Bollywood will vouch for tales of his generosity. And why not? When you unhesitatingly share a tiffin brought by your spotboy or the lightmen, or look after them and their families in times of need, you are bound to earn respect.
From lightmen to assistant directors, from co-actors to filmmakers, everyone DT asked had only good words for the large-hearted Sanju. “Yeh court case ke chakkar mein public ko itna interest nahin. Sanjay Dutt humkomast teen ghante main sab dukh bhula deta hai aur hasata hai. Woh bahut accha actor hai,”says housemaid Karuna Garud. Says lensman Sameer Surve, “This to be or not to be kind of situation can be the biggest punishment for anybody. Sanjay Dutt has suffered a lot for whatever he may have done or not done. He needs respite now.”
At the Dutt residence at Pali Hill, Mumbai, despite the dark clouds looming, sisters Priya and Namrata have plans for Sanjay on his birthday on Sunday, July 29. They share some of their most intense feelings for him with DT. Namrata Dutt: It can’t be a complete celebration as there’s always this horrible feeling because of the case. But we try to look beyond that. I pray that he gets back his freedom, and it’ll be the most wonderful gift he’ll ever get. All the trials and tribulations have inculcated a lot of right values in him. Today he’s become much more calmer. And as for settling down and getting married, it is secondary compared to his freedom. On the day of his birthday, he may host a small dinner party at home for close friends and family. Trishala, his daughter, will call him at midnight. Some of our best birthdays were when we were kids. Things have changed so much since then, especially in his life. I wish him happiness and hope that he is at peace. Priya Dutt: I am still in a dilemma about what to give him. For Sanjay, birthday gifts don’t matter. He is very sentimental about people. I haven’t given him anything till now, but this time, I want to gift him something small but of immense sentimental value. As kids, we used to have the simplest birthdays. But the most special one was the year before last. Dad had just passed away and there were only three of us. It was emotional. We missed our parents but spent quality time together.
